Horseback Riding in the Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge Cabin Getaways rents cabins — we don't operate, book, or take reservations for horseback riding, and we aren't affiliated with any of the stables listed here. They're independent businesses. For rides, availability, and pricing, please contact each stable directly using the links below.

Seeing the Gorge from the saddle is a different kind of day — slower than climbing, gentler than a hard hike, and an easy win for a couple or a group with mixed experience. Several independent, family-run stables in the area offer guided trail rides through Appalachian ridges, old country roads, and forest most people never see on foot. Here's who runs them and how to reach them.

Cable's Riding Stables (Zachariah, Wolfe County). The closest stable to our area — same county, about 10 miles from Natural Bridge. Cable's is a family operation, and their guided hour-long trail ride follows an old country road once used by buggies, with scenery that holds up year-round. Relaxed and beginner-friendly. Look them up on the Red River Gorge tourism directory and contact them directly to ride.

Middle Fork Stables. A newer operation near the Red River Gorge Geological Area. They run guided trail rides for ages 13 and up, pony rides for kids under 13, and custom adventures including overnight camping trips for adults. Details and booking: middleforkstables.com.

Whisper Valley Trails (near Beattyville). Toward the southern tip of the Gorge, Whisper Valley runs a roughly two-hour guided ride through rugged country past waterfalls, cliff faces, and a lake — the longer format gives guides time to coach newer riders. Find them on Facebook (Whisper Valley Trails) to check rides and availability.

What to expect. These are guided rides on gentle horses — no experience required. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, and book ahead, especially on summer weekends.

When to go. Most area stables run roughly spring through fall, with fall color making the ridge rides especially worth it. Hours, seasons, and minimum ages vary by stable — confirm directly with them when you book.

Where to stay (this part we can help with)

After a few hours in the saddle, a hot tub and a fire pit go a long way. Our cabins put you minutes from the Gorge's trails and adventures, with quiet, couples-friendly spots to land at the end of the day — like Simply Irresistible and Great Expectations, both with private hot tubs, or Manor House for a larger group.
