Kayaking

Kayaking in the Red River Gorge — Above and Below Ground

The Gorge gives you two completely different ways to get on the water, and a lot of people don't realize the second one exists.

On the river. The Red River winds right through the Gorge, and on calmer stretches it's an easy, scenic paddle past cliffs and forest — good for a relaxed half-day. Spring brings higher, faster water for more experienced paddlers; summer is mellow and warm. Bring your own boat, or check with local outfitters for rentals and shuttles, since water levels and access change with the season.

Underground — the one people travel for. Just off Highway 11, a few miles south of Natural Bridge, you can kayak through a 100-year-old flooded limestone mine. Tours are run by Gorge Underground (we're not affiliated — book directly at gorgeunderground.com). The one-hour Classic Kayak or Boat Tour glides through calm, still water by headlamp; the 1.5-hour Crystal Clear LED kayak and stand-up-paddleboard tours (run with their partner, SUP Kentucky) light the water in color so you can watch rainbow trout swim beneath you. It's open year-round — the mine stays cool (around 50°F), so wear layers no matter the season. Tours are open to ages 5 and up, groups stay small, and weekends sell out, so book online ahead.

Make a day of it. Pair an underground tour with a hike or a swimming hole, then head back to the cabin. Most people spend an hour or two underground and want the rest of the day above ground.

Where to stay

Our cabins sit minutes from both the river and the underground tours — a comfortable, secluded base with a hot tub for after. Simply Irresistible, Great Expectations, and Manor House are guest favorites. Browse all our cabins →
