Red River Gorge is two hours from Cincinnati on a straight shot south on I-75 through Kentucky. For a city that large, sitting that close to a nationally recognized wilderness area with over 100 natural sandstone arches and some of the best rock climbing in the eastern US, the Gorge is quietly one of the most underutilized weekend destinations in the region. Here's how to do it right.
Getting there
I-75 South from Cincinnati to Lexington, then the Mountain Parkway East from Lexington. Exit at KY-15 South toward Campton. Total drive: about two hours from downtown Cincinnati, two and a quarter from the northern suburbs. No toll roads.
Friday night
Leave Cincinnati by 5pm and you're at your cabin before 7:30. Stop at Koop's General Store in Campton for firewood and anything you need for the evening. Check-in is smart-lock — your cabin is ready when you arrive. Use Friday night to decompress; the fire pit and a drink on the deck is the right move.
Saturday
Morning hike. The best single hike for first-timers is Rough Trail to Gray's Arch — a round trip of about six miles ending at one of the most impressive natural sandstone arches in the eastern US. If that feels like too much, the half-mile walk to Gray's Arch from the trailhead is dramatically shorter and still worth it.
Lunch back at the cabin or at Redpoint BBQ in Slade — it has outdoor seating and a disc golf course on site. Afternoon at Natural Bridge State Park: ride the Skylift or hike up the Original Trail. On the way back, stop at The Gorge Underground if they have a tour slot — it's an underground cave system you navigate by kayak, and booking in advance is worth it. Dinner at Hungry Hiker in Campton or Miguel's Pizza in Slade.
Sunday
Easy morning, coffee on the deck. Hike the Pinnacles at Natural Bridge before leaving — a short, steep trail with a panoramic view over the Gorge that takes about 45 minutes round trip. It's a good one to end on. Drive home; you're back in Cincinnati by 2pm.
Where to stay
For Cincinnati couples, Great Expectations is worth knowing about — two-person cabin with a private hot tub and garage doors that open to the outdoors. Sunday Blues works well for groups of four to six. Book online in a few taps, or message us through Airbnb with any questions.
