Itinerary

A Red River Gorge Weekend Getaway from Frankfort

From Frankfort, the Gorge is an easy reach — roughly an hour and a half by car, close enough for a weekend or even a packed day trip.

The drive. Take I-64 East past Lexington and Winchester, then the Mountain Parkway to exit 33 at Slade. It's almost all highway.

What to do. With the short drive, you can be on a trail by mid-morning. Knock out a classic hike or two (Natural Bridge, Sky Bridge, Gray's Arch), chase a waterfall at Creation Falls, and add a swimming hole in summer or underground kayaking any time of year. Being this close means you don't have to choose — make it a weekend and do it all without rushing.

Why stay over. Even at ninety minutes, a cabin turns a good day trip into a real getaway: a hot tub after the trail, a fire pit at night, and a slow morning before you head back. And you skip the back-and-forth driving entirely.
