Itinerary

A Red River Gorge Weekend Getaway from Louisville

The Gorge is one of the best weekend escapes from Louisville — about 90 miles and roughly two hours door to door, no flights, no hassle.

The drive. Head east on I-64 toward Lexington, continue past Winchester, and pick up the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway to exit 33 at Slade. It's a straight, easy run that drops you right at the edge of the Gorge.

What to do with a weekend. Two days is plenty for a couple of signature hikes (Gray's Arch, Sky Bridge, or Natural Bridge), a waterfall stop at Creation Falls, and something different like underground kayaking. In summer, add a swimming hole; in fall, come for the color (and book well ahead). Cap each day back at the cabin in the hot tub.

Why a cabin beats a day trip. Two hours each way eats a day trip alive. Staying over means you wake up inside the Gorge with a full day ahead instead of a drive — and you get the fire pit, the deck, and the quiet that make the trip feel like an actual escape.
