A Red River Gorge Weekend Getaway from Richmond

Richmond is one of the closest cities to the Gorge — about an hour away — so you're spoiled. You can go for the day on a whim or settle in for a weekend.

The drive. From Richmond, head up toward Lexington and over to I-64 East / the Mountain Parkway to exit 33 at Slade. Around an hour, mostly highway.

What to do. Being this close means no wasted time. Start with a signature hike (Natural Bridge, Sky Bridge, or Gray's Arch), add Creation Falls, and mix in a swimming hole in summer or underground kayaking year-round. With a weekend, you can slow down and hit the longer ridge loops too.

Why stay over even when you're close. An hour is short — but a cabin still changes the trip. Instead of driving home tired after a hike, you're in the hot tub by dark and back on the trail at sunrise. The fire pit and quiet are the part a day trip never gives you.
