Cliffview Resort Insider Guide: What to Know Before You Stay

Cliffview Resort sits at the geographic and experiential center of Red River Gorge, Kentucky. Most visitors find it because they're searching for cabin rentals in the area. What they don't always know is what the resort actually is, what's on it, and how to use it properly. Here's what we know after years of operating cabins inside it.

What Cliffview Resort is

Cliffview is a private resort community sitting above the Red River Gorge in Wolfe County, Kentucky. It's not a hotel — it's a collection of privately owned and managed cabins, amenities, and attractions spread across a ridgeline. The views from the top of the property look out over forest and cliffs in every direction. The roads are paved and quiet. At night the light pollution is low enough that the Milky Way is visible on clear nights.

The resort is also home to the Red River Gorge Zipline — one of the longest and most recognized zipline operations in the state — and to Out The Top Adventures, which runs guided side-by-side ATV tours and Slingshot vehicle rentals directly from the property. Both operate independently and require separate booking.

Getting there

The resort is accessible from Highway 15 and from KY-11. If you're coming from Lexington, the most direct route is about an hour southeast. From Cincinnati, you're looking at about two hours. The road up to the resort is paved but winds — if you're towing anything or driving a large vehicle, take it slow on the last mile.

Where our cabins sit

We operate 14 cabins in and around Cliffview Resort. The Manor House sits at the absolute peak of the property — the highest point, with the longest views, which is where the “Island in the Sky” name comes from. The smaller couples cabins like Simply Irresistible, Great Expectations, and Moodlight are tucked into wooded sections of the resort with more privacy and less foot traffic.

What guests get wrong

The most common mistake is underestimating how much is available without leaving the property for the first day. New arrivals often drive out immediately to look for things to do when what they actually wanted was already fifteen feet from their cabin door. The second most common mistake is not bringing enough food for the first night. Campton is ten minutes away, but if you arrive late on a Friday, your options narrow fast. Stop at Koop's General Store on the way in for basics.

Cliffview Resort is the best-positioned base camp in Red River Gorge. Everything the Gorge offers — hiking, climbing, ziplining, kayaking, ATV touring, dining, local markets — is within fifteen minutes.
