Things to Do

12 Reasons to Visit the Red River Gorge

One of the most concentrated stretches of natural beauty and adventure in the eastern U.S. — here's why it's worth the drive.

  1. The arches. The Gorge has one of the highest concentrations of natural sandstone arches in the country — Natural Bridge, Sky Bridge, Gray's Arch, and dozens more.
  2. World-class rock climbing. The Red is a globally known sport-climbing destination, drawing climbers from around the world.
  3. Hiking for everyone. Easy arch walks to all-day ridge loops — see our hiking-trails guide.
  4. Swimming holes. Clear creek pools and waterfalls to cool off in all summer.
  5. Waterfalls. Creation Falls and others run hardest in spring.
  6. The scenic byway and Nada Tunnel. A gorgeous loop drive through the one-lane, hand-cut Nada Tunnel.
  7. Underground kayaking. Paddle a 100-year-old flooded mine — nothing else like it nearby.
  8. Fall color. October turns the whole gorge gold and red (and busy — book early).
  9. Dark skies. Some of the best stargazing in Kentucky, far from city light.
  10. Miguel's Pizza. The legendary climber hangout and unofficial Gorge headquarters.
  11. Off-road and Jeep adventures. Hollerwood Offroad Park and guided tours nearby.
  12. It's close. An easy weekend from Lexington (~1 hr), Louisville and Cincinnati (~2 hrs).

Where to stay

Most of this is spread across the area, so a cabin in the middle of it beats a long daily drive in. Ours put you minutes from the trails, with a hot tub for after — Simply Irresistible, Great Expectations, and Manor House are favorites. Browse all our cabins →
