Red River Gorge is one hour and fifteen minutes from downtown Lexington, which makes it the closest proper wilderness escape available to anyone living in central Kentucky. If you've been meaning to go and haven't made it yet, this is the itinerary that makes it easy.
Friday
Leave Lexington after work. Take I-64 East to the Mountain Parkway, exit at KY-15 South toward Campton. Stop at Koop's General Store in Campton on the way through — it's open late and carries everything you forgot to bring: firewood, charcoal, snacks, basic groceries. Check into your cabin (all smart-lock entry, so no coordination), light the fire pit, and that's the whole agenda for Friday night.
Saturday
Wake up early. Drive to the Auxier Ridge trailhead — about twelve minutes from Cliffview Resort. It's a moderate hike, roughly five miles round trip, with views from the ridge that most people remember longer than any other part of the trip. Go early to beat the weekend crowds. Back at the cabin by noon for lunch on the deck.
Afternoon: choose your own direction. If you want structured activity, book a side-by-side ATV tour through Out The Top Adventures or a zipline run through Red River Gorge Zipline — both operate on property at Cliffview. If you'd rather explore independently, drive to Natural Bridge State Park. The Skylift carries you to the top of the natural bridge formation if the stairs feel like too much after the morning hike.
Dinner at Miguel's Pizza in Slade. It's not fancy and it's not fast — the line on Saturday evenings can run thirty minutes — but it's worth it. Get there before 6pm if you can. Then back to the cabin: hot tub if your cabin has one, fire pit, stars.
Sunday
Hike to Creation Falls before you leave. It's an easy trail, about a mile and a half round trip, ending at a waterfall that drops into a natural swimming pool. Stop for coffee at The Brick in Campton on your way back to the highway. Home to Lexington by noon.
Where to stay
Any of our couples cabins inside Cliffview Resort work for this trip. Simply Irresistible and Wild at Heart are the most popular for Lexington weekend trips. Both have hot tubs, fire pits, and a location that means you spend zero time in the car on Saturday after you arrive.
